Hi!
I noticed it when we were moving our daughter’s bed for her.
The base of the wall just didn’t look right.
Mr. Austin poked at it and confirmed that it didn’t feel right, either.
And that’s how we discovered that there was water damage in our house.
Turns out the source was a very tiny crack in the foundation. It’s barely perceptible, just the teensiest little thing. But if you get up real close to it and squint, you’ll go “yep, that’s a crack alright.”
My father-in-law swung by to help patch it up, but we had to rip part of the wall out and keep an eye on it to make sure no more moisture snuck its way in.
So for the last few weeks, there was this big chunk of the wall missing.
And we just had to live with it.
After a while, it almost started to feel normal.
If anyone had come over during that time, I probably wouldn’t even have thought to warn them about it. We would’ve just walked into the room and I’d be like, “Oh yeah, that’s our hole. 👍”
But the hole is gone now, thankfully.
And that’s great, because I was kind of starting to feel like my own slumlord.
Like yeah, the deck needs to be fixed up. When the door to the basement cracked, we just decided the basement didn’t need a door. And an hour ago, I caught one of my kids digging holes in the backyard for reasons that are beyond me.
But living as if walls are optional, that’s a step too far.
So it’s been a whole morning of replacing insulation, cutting sheetrock, and slapping putty over the cracks.
Well, for Jake and his dad anyway.
I didn’t do any of that. I kept the kids busy, entertained them with old movies, and bribed them with Timbits.
We all did our part here is what I’m saying.
Anyway, the deck’s still too creaky in some spots. The heat pump’s overdue for a cleaning. The weather stripping around the front door should’ve been replaced last year.
But at least we’re fully walled up again. And now I’m going to pay close attention to the foundation whenever I’m outside, because I’d very much like to keep it that way.
Love,
Emma ❤
