You know how in cartoons there was always this extremely fragile kid?
The kid who was allergic to everything. The kid who always puffed on an inhaler because even the air was too much. The kid whose glasses were taped together because they’re even too klutzy to handle gravity.
Well, that’s basically me in a nutshell.
I’m the allergy kid.
My glasses are intact - not a single strip of tape in sight.
My allergies are pretty manageable overall. As long as a paramedic never gives me the wrong kind of antibiotic, I should be fine.
I don’t even have an inhaler, so lucky me.
But I’m fragile in all sorts of other ways.
If I crochet too long, my body kind of falls apart.
I barely have an immune system so I catch everything I’m exposed to.
I deal with chronic fatigue and brain fog, so sometimes I barely feel awake even though my eyes are wide open.
And I’ve just added one more item to the list of things I can’t handle.
Scented wax.
I’m a big fan of scented candles, so I thought using a wax melter would be like that but better. So, I got a cute one that looks like a fireplace.
I loved the smell of the little wax cubes. I loved the glow of the artificial fire. I loved that my nose didn’t have to deal with the reality of living in a house with five pets.
But what I didn’t love is the ocular migraines it gave me.
It didn’t take long to figure it out. I normally get ocular migraines about once a month at most.
But I’ve been having them more days than not.
And it all started on the exact same day I got my wax warmer.
I may have brain fog half the time, but there’s no missing a correlation that strong.
Which totally blows because I really enjoyed filling the room with tropical aromas.
I was even hoping that creating a cozy scented wonderland would help me get in the mood more easily.
But it’s been the total opposite - even though it’s kind of like being blindfolded from the inside, I have zero horny thoughts when I’m going through an ocular migraine.
So now I’ve got a little kitschy fireplace that doesn’t really do much. I guess I could use the warming tray to thaw an Uncrustable in record time, but that’s about it.
Which is kind of a bummer. But hey, no one ever said being the allergy kid would be a barrel of monkeys.
